Match Report - Seniors 21st July 2019

Updated: Aug 27, 2019

A four goal scoring spree by CMI Busselton City midfielder Mathis Wieler was the standout feature in his side’s 5-1 win over Hay Park in Sunday’s South West Cup clash. Wieler, returned to the club this year after previously playing in 2016 but has been hampered this season with a knee injury. However he was back to his best with three goals in the first half before adding another shortly after the half time break. City got off to a great start to the match when after 18 minutes a penetrating cross from Justin McClurg was clinically finished by striker Mitch Monck. The locals then shot out to 4-0 lead courtesy of Wieler before conceding a goal late in the first half. Hay Park had the advantage of a blustery wind in the second spell but the composure of youngsters McClurg and Beau Haynes along with some outstanding defending by Rich Amey, Daniel Dewaal and Rob Seia ensured Busselton’s passage into a semi-final against Dynamos next month.

Busselton City reserves were surprisingly defeated 2-1 by a lower placed Hay Park outfit in their Cup game. City scored first when a curling 25 metre shot from Monck gave the Hay Park keeper no chance. However shortly afterwards some indecisive Busselton defending was punished and Hay Park were able to grab an equaliser. In the second half Busselton once again dominated proceedings through the efforts of Kei Ichikawa and Jaxon Rynvis, but they got caught on a counter attack and Hay Park made them pay dearly. In the final 15 minutes City had a number of chances to grab a second goal with Martin Ryan, Luke Tompsett and Jasper Grono all going close.

This weekend all Busselton City sides are away with the ladies playing a Friday evening fixture against Australind before both men’s teams take on Bunbury United on Saturday night. The Masters side will venture down to Margaret River for their Sunday morning fixture.
